Washington, D.C. — Author, filmmaker, and MSNBC/NBC News anchor Richard Lui, the first Asian American man to host a daily national cable news show, will receive the Outstanding Achievement Award at the OCA - Asian Pacific American Advocates (OCA) 50th Anniversary National Convention July 12–16, 2023 at the Capital Hilton in Washington, D.C.
“Richard Lui is a trailblazer and advocate who has ensured our stories were told throughout his career,” said OCA President Linda Ng. “We can think of no better recipient for this year’s Outstanding Achievement Award.”
Lui will receive his award at the OCA Awards Gala on Saturday, July 15. Others being honored that night are NBA player Jeremy Lin, NARAL Pro-Choice President Mini Timmaraju, TV and film actor Tamlyn Tomita, OCA-New Jersey past president Virginia Ng, and the Japanese American Citizens League.
“Receiving this award is truly an honor,” Lui said. “Being recognized for your community work is humbling and rewarding. OCA has been a vital organization for AAPI advancements throughout its history, and I am proud to be part of that history.”
Lui has worked as a broadcast journalist for over 30 years. In 2007, he became the first Asian American man to host a daily national cable news show. He was the Asian American Journalist Association’s 2013 Member of the Year. For the past decade, he has been a caregiver for his mother and father, sharing his experience in a bestselling book, “Enough About Me” (HarperCollins/Zondervan), and two Academy Award qualifying documentary films, “SKY BLOSSOM” and “UNCONDITIONAL,” which was recently screened at the White House. He is currently working on an upcoming book to be released in 2024 on the selfless business.
The awards gala is only one part of the five-day OCA National Convention. Other highlights include OCA Day on the Hill on Thursday, as well as three town halls that will highlight coalition building, equitable access to healthcare and well-being, and civic engagement. Notable speakers for these town halls, and over 20 breakout sessions, include Deputy Assistant to the President and AANHPI Sr. Liaison Erika Moritsugu, Journalist Helen Zia, Professors Janelle Wong and Xiaoxing Xi, author Curtis Chin, and many other government officials, community and academic leaders, and youth organizers.
The conference is free and open to the public. RSVP is encouraged to reserve your seat, and full-package registrations to access the Friday evening concert and Saturday night Awards Gala are available online at www.ocanationalconvention.org.
