Isabel Lam
Isabel Lam (she/her) is a passionate advocate for public policy and social justice, focusing on healthcare equity and women's health. As a first-generation Chinese-Vietnamese American, she values representation and inclusivity.
Isabel studies Political Science and Economics at the University of Pittsburgh, with a minor in Chinese. Growing up in a predominantly white community, she experienced cultural rejection until she began learning Chinese to connect with her grandparents in China. This language journey ignited her curiosity about her culture and fueled her desire to make a positive impact.
Isabel's interest in health policy stems from her personal experience as a Medicaid recipient, understanding the importance of affordable healthcare. In high school, she founded a local chapter of PERIOD. The Menstrual Movement, addressing period poverty. Within a short period, she secured free menstrual products in all girls' bathrooms district-wide and co-signed legislation for Pennsylvania schools grades 5-12.
As Vice President of Operations for Pitt's Student Government Board, Isabel gained expertise in campus policy-making. Now, she aims to provide free menstrual products campus-wide, promoting inclusivity for all menstruators. She also plans to advocate for statewide legislation, like House Bill 1954, ensuring free menstrual products in all girls' bathrooms grades 6-12.
Isabel's commitment to public service extends beyond menstrual equity. She recognizes the importance of healthcare access and hopes to alleviate period poverty in Pittsburgh by restarting the PERIOD. chapter at her university. Isabel believes in the power of small actions to bring about change and continues to work towards a more equitable society.
Isabel Lam is dedicated to social justice, striving for equitable healthcare and advocating for marginalized communities. Through her studies, activism, and leadership roles, she is making a meaningful impact on campus and in the wider community.
