AAPI HATE CRIMES IN HISTORY: THEY’RE NOT NEW

Session.png

This four-part webinar series will center around Asian American and Pacific Islander hate crimes. Each webinar will feature a different topic of conversation from history that breaks down and unpacks hate crimes against AAPIs in American history that have hid beneath the narrative for far too long.

Part One: Vincent Chin

27-year-old Chinese American Vincent Chin was beaten to death by two white men on the night of June 19, 1982, just days before his wedding day. This webinar goes in depth into what what happened, the AAPI community’s response, why it matters, and what we can do today to support our fellow community members.

Part Two: Culture Colonized

The second of our four-part series, this AAPI History Webinar will be focusing on the wrongful and illegal annexation of Hawai'i as a state in 1898. We will be discussing the disrespect for Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander culture through colonization, imperialism, and militarization that continues today. Join us to discover more of the NHPI narrative that's been removed for far too long.

Part Three: The Dotbusters

From the 1970s-90s, the Indian and South Asian community in Jersey City lived in fear of safety from the outwardly racist hate group, the Dotbusters.

To learn about this unheard-of moment in history and hear from members of the South Asian community on their experiences on these unfair sentiments, join us.

Part Four: Fil-Am Experience

The Filipino American experience goes much further back than many of us realize. For centuries, they've been needed and used, yet unwelcomed and exploited. Join the conversation to discuss the inconsistent treatment of Filipino Americans throughout history.

Many thanks to Emilio Manuel Camu of OCA Utah and Jenah Maravilla of OCA Greater Houston for being such great advocates to and for the Filipino American community on a local and national level.
