The Bill’s Achievements

With funding for AANAPISIs underway for over three successful years, grant recipients report their mission statements as follows:

City College of San Francisco (California)

  • Increase participation of Filipino and other underrepresented students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) majors by 20%
  • Enhance communication among STEM department to reduce time to complete program and improve transfer rates by 5%
  • Improve pass rates in STEM majors by 15% through comprehensive support services             

Foothill-DeAnze Community College (California)

  • Expand Summer Bridge to include more targeted AAPI students
  • Introduce break-out sessions with Asian language translation to New Student and Parent Open House
  • Pilot New Student Intake Protocal, a program that connects incoming students with counseling and campus services based on individual needs

Seattle Community College (Washington)

  • Establish Virtual Asian American and Pacific Islander Higher Education Resource Center (AAPIHERC)
  • Reach toward disaggregated AAPI Institutional Data

University of Hawaii at Hilo (Hawaii)

  • Improve Pacific Island studies certificate program by developing new curriculum as well as by revising program requirements, introducing speaker series, and developing an exchange program

University of Maryland (Maryland)

  • Implement Asian American Studies Program (AAST) to provide access to leadership and mentorship paths for future educational and career success, quadrupling AAST course offerings and tripling enrollment in ethnic-specific courses.
  • Increase AAST minor enrollment from zero in 2008 to over eighty in 2009 and graduated sixteen AAST minors this year
